Make it last

Make it last

Globally we buy 80 billion new items of clothing each year, but as we’re also trying to stick to the latest trends of fast fashion, a lot of it ends up in the back of our wardrobes and 350,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year.

Making conscious choices, buying less, and buying items that will last longerĀ could make a huge difference. This probably means you might need to plan your purchases a bit more and perhaps choose more classic items rather than always going for ‘the latest trend’ (that may go out of fashion quickly). Finding your way of being more sustainable is also important to make sure shopping is still fun and that your clothes still make you feel stylish / hot / comfortable / powerful / happy / trendy / cute / on point.

The True Cost

One of 2015’s most important films was The True Cost, showing, literally, the true cost of the fashion industry. It shows an industry that is the second most polluting industry on earth, second only to the oil industry. It shows an industry where the impact on natural resources isn’t even measured. And it shows an industry where people are being killed due to lack of rights and safety.

Before seeing the film I had already made the decision that I was going to be more conscious with the fashion purchases I was making, but The True Cost really brought it home. Initially I felt like I didn’t want to buy any clothes ever again, but I appreciate that isn’t quite the solution either, as the fashion industry creates job opportunities and helps to grow the world’s economy. But as consumers we can definitely make more conscious / ethical / sustainable choices. The film highlights great slow fashion brands such as People Tree that are made with fair conditions and sustainable materials.

People Tree is, thankfully, only one example of brands doing things differently – keep following the blog for more examples and further inspiration of how to be a more conscious consumer.

Hello!

Hello!

This will be an outlet for sharing thoughts on making conscious decisions when shopping/eating/living, hopefully encouraging people to buy nice things, eat well and have fun, whilst also making the world a bit better!

As consumers, and citizens of the world, we can ask where products were made, and we can demand fair pay for those that made them. We can question how sustainable a product is, and we can choose one that will last longer. We can encourage positive social impact, and we can use our purchasing power to make a difference.

If you’ve got tips on anything great you’ve read/seen/heard about then please do share!
